What Students Say

Sylvia Briggs-Bauer, 13, wrote this poem for the school’s poetry slam. Using watercolors, she painted the illustration.

On a festive Saturday summer afternoon during a neighborhood-wide garage and bake sales of cookies and lemonade, two 10 year-old friends painted pet rocks — flowers and hearts. Then Aubrey, in the wink of an eye, without comment to anyone, painted a foreboding assessment of the conditions she has noticed. "If nature dies then we die with it."
